Everything You Need To Know About Oscar 2021 Part-One

 93rd ACADEMY AWARDS PART ONE

On 25th April 2021 Oscars ceremony took place in Los Angeles. The nominations were announced on March 15 202,1 by Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas. In this year’s films released two different calendar years were available for award consideration in the same category after the 6th Oscars. David Fincher’s Mank got the most nominations ten as following Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Original Score, Best Sound. Nomadland got the most awards in the night. The movie got three awards for Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Director. First time after the 78th Oscars, no film has won more than 3 awards. This year’s ceremony ended with the Best Actor category marking its first time since the 44th Oscars.

So in the first part, I am going to write a total of eleven categories, their winners and nominees. Categories are as follows Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Original Screenplay, Best International Feature Film, Best Documentary Feature, Best Documentary Short Subject, Best Live Action Short Film, Best Original Score, Best Original Song, Best Sound. So let's begin.

➢ Best Sound

For the Best Sound category Sound of Metal, Greyhound, Mank, News Of The World, Soul were nominations. Out of these Sound of Metal got the award. Jaime Baksht, Nicolas Becker, Philip Bladh, Carlos Cortes and Michelle Couttolrnc are recipients of the award. The film is based on a musician so we can get why its sound is so good and award-worthy. There were serious contenders for this category particularly Greyhound and Soul. I liked the sound of Greyhound compare to Sound of Metal. Both were well deserved and I am happy that Sound Of Metal got an award as it was deserving.

➢ Best Original Song

For the Best Original Sound category songs from Judas and the Black Messiah, The Trail of the Chicago 7, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of fire Saga, The Life Ahead, One Night In Miami were nominated. The song “Fight For You” From Judas and the Black Messiah won the award. Song’s music is given by D’Mile and H.E.R. and lyrics by H.E.R. and Tiara Thomas. You all should listen to the song. The song from One Night In Miami “Speak Now” is also a great one. The music and lyric are given by Sam Ashworth and Leslie Odom Jr. they are unfortunate to miss the award as the song is classy.

➢ Best Original Score

Original Score gives the film emotional touch by their music during the scenes. For this category Soul, Mank, Da 5 Bloods, Minari, News of the World were nominated. An animated movie Soul won the award as it was well deserving. Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and Jon Batiste are creators of the score and got an award. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross were also nominated for another movie Mank. So 2 nominations in the same category for two different movies, we can guess their magic from this.

➢ Best Live Action Short Film

The next category is Best Live Action Short Film. The Present, Feeling Through, The Letter Room, Two Distant Strangers, White Eye were the nominees. From these short films, Two Distant Strangers won the award. The short film is based on a revolutionary moment of Black Lives Matter. The film shows the deaths of Black Americans during their encounters with police from the eyes of a victim who is trapped in a time loop that keeps ending with the death. The film stars Joey Bada$$ as Carter James(victim) and Andrew Howard as Merk, an NYPD officer. The film is directed by Trevon Free and Martin Desmond Roe. The film is available on Netflix. The Letter Room is also an interesting short film to watch.

➢ Best Documentary Short Subject

In this category following films were nominated:- Do Not Split, A Love Song for Latasha, Hunger Ward, Colette, A Concerto Is a Conversation. Colette is the winner in this category. Colette is a story of former French Resistance who travels to Germany first time in 74 years after her brother got killed by Nazis. Colette is produced by Respawn Entertainment who is the creator of the Call Of Duty video game and it became the first film produced by a video-game studio to get an award or nomination in an Academy Awards. The film is created by Alice Doyard and Anthony Giacchino.

➢ Best Documentary Feature

In this category Time, Crip Camp, My Octopus Teacher, The Mole Agent, Collective Alexander were the nominations. My Octopus Teacher won the award. My Octopus Teacher documents a year spent by filmmaker Craig Foster where he develops a relationship with an octopus in Kelp Forest. Foster describes the effect of this mentorship-like relationship with the octopus provided him, teaching him a lesson on the fragility of life and humanity’s connection with nature. The film is available on Netflix. Time is also a great and heartfelt film. It showcases the struggle of Sibil Fox Richardson, fighting for the release of her husband, Rob Richardson, who is serving a 60-year prison sentence for engaging in an armed bank robbery. It is available on prime video.

➢ Best International Feature Film

In this category Better Days (Hong Kong) in Mandarin, The Man Who Sold His Skin (Tunisia) in Arabic, Collective (Romania) in Romanian, Quo Vadis Aida? (Bosnia and Herzegovina) in Bosnian, Another Round (Denmark) in Danish. From all these films Another Round from Denmark won the award. The film is based on four friends and their experiment with alcohol. The film got another nomination in the Best Director category. So the Better Days from Hong Kong is a great romantic crime film. The film is based on a young adult novel His Youth, In Her Beauty. It revolves around a 12th-grade student Chen Nian who gets bullied by a group after her friend's death because of bullying and a street thug Xiao Bei who falls in love with Chen Nian.

➢ Best Original Screenplay

In this category The Trail of the Chicago 7, Minari, Sound of Metal, Promising Young Women, Judas and the Black Messiah. Promising Young Women won the award. Emerald Fennell has written the story of the movie and also directed it. We all know her for portraying the role of Camilla Parker Bowles in the show ‘The Crown’. The film revolves around a woman seeking revenge on her friend’s death, who was a rape victim. The film stars Carey Mulligan as the main protagonist, Cassie Thomas who is seeking avenge. Margot Robbie is one of the producers of the film. Sound Of Metal is the unlucky one to miss out on the award.

➢ Best Actress

For this category Vanessa Kirby for Pieces of a Women, Viola Davis for Black Bottom, Andra Day for The United States v/s Billie Holiday, Frances McDormand for Nomadland, Carey Mulligan for Promising Young Women. Out of all these talented actresses, Frances McDormand won the award for the record third time. She became the only fourth actress to get three Academy Awards in an acting category. Vanessa Kirby’s role as a pregnant woman who is giving home birth is commendable. All the actresses were well deserving. The well-deserving nominations which got snubbed are Julia Garner from The Assistant and Haley Bennett from Swallow. They gave a prominent performance. Viola Davis entered in Guinness World Records for most nominations received by a Black Actor (female).

➢ Best Director

For this category, Lee Isaac Chung for Minari, Chloe Zhao for Nomadland, David Fincher for Mank, Thomas Vinterberg for Another Round, Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Women. Chloe Zhao won the award and became the first Asian to win Best Director (female). Chloe Zhao and Emerald Fennell were set a record for most females nominated in the specific Oscar category. Many people were surprised after the result as we thought David Fincher was a front runner for the award. Ahhhh this is not the first time this had happened though.

➢ Best Picture

For this category Nomadland, The Father, Minari, The Trial of the Chicago 7, Promising Young Women, Sound of Metal, Mank, Judas and the Black Messiah. Nomadland won the prestigious award. Mollye Asher, Dan Janvey, Frances McDormand, Peter Spears, and Chole Zhao received this award. Frances McDormand and Chole Zhao received their second award of the night.
